The exhibition, "In Our Nature," includes 21 works of still life and portraiture. It takes inspiration from the meaning of nature defined as "the phenomena of the physical world" as well as “innate qualities of character.”
The viewer will find subtle allegories throughout the paintings. One example of this is the presence of eucalyptus leaves, symbolic of breath. The carefully chosen objects remind us of our mortality, and yet the paintings of effigies and florals enrich this ailment of the human psyche with their natural beauty.
Diverging from traditional societal portraiture, the portrait paintings instead highlight archetypes of character. In representing more than themselves, these renderings of strength and contemplation allow the viewer to understand the idea of the muse as a vessel for connection.
The still lifes and portraits bring both definitions of “our nature” together. As these pieces spiral up the staircase, each builds upon the next until the final 8-foot triptych, a bursting crescendo of 33 figures, whose bodies describe the struggle- and final triumph- of the human spirit.
